England player ratings from Euro 2024 as Palmer shines and Rice flops (2024)

Just five of England's 26-man squad failed to earn a single minute at Euro 2024 but Gareth Southgate's side were unable to bring home the trophy after defeat in the final to unbeaten Spain

The day after the night before - and a familiar feeling for England's players.

After reaching their first major final on foreign soil, Gareth Southgate's squad fell agonisingly short again as their long wait for a trophy continues. But while a successive European final is perhaps still something to be celebrated, the narrow defeat to Spain will not completely gloss over England's shortcomings at a difficult tournament in Germany.

A shaky start had pressure mounting and boos ringing out for Southgate's troops, while cups of beer were flung in his direction. And it took some dramatic interventions to keep England's Euros alive in the knockouts.

From Jude Bellingham's overhead kick, to Bukayo Saka's equaliser and shootout win over Switzerland, before goals from super subs Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer had England dreaming it could still be coming home. Sadly it wasn't to be, but here's how all those who got on the pitch for England fared...

Jordan Pickford - 8

The hero of a penalty shootout win against Switzerland, excellent in the final and another tournament where he did England proud.

‌Marc Guehi - 8

The Crystal Palace defender put in a strong case for England’s best player. Small margins his undoing in the end, but is a big prospect.

‌Ezri Konsa - 6

Versatile and willing, he filled in at left-back as a substitute and was faultless when he started against Switzerland. Good job.

‌Luke Shaw - 6

Made his first start in 148 days in the final. Gareth Southgate ’s decision to take him caused much debate and, ultimately, was it really worth it?

‌John Stones - 7

Another strong tournament for a defender who is now up to 79 caps and has vast experience and a great mentality. Will be vital for World Cup.

‌Kieran Trippier - 6

For a player just coming back from injury, he did really well filling in on the wrong side both as a full-back and wing-back. Good squad man.

‌Kyle Walker - 6

This was not his best tournament. He has been brilliant for England but looked tired and his jet-heeled pace was missing.

‌Trent Alexander-Arnold - 6

Scored the winning penalty against Switzerland so played his part. But the midfield experiment was abandoned after two games.

‌Conor Gallagher - 5

Did well as a substitute but when he started against Slovenia, he was hooked at half-time. Great club player, battler and yet jury is out on his international quality.

‌Kobbie Mainoo - 7

Had his best game against Holland in the semi-final while he really came of age in this tournament and showed he is ready for England.

‌Declan Rice - 5

When you consider his quality for Arsenal and consistency for England, there was something missing. He looked tired - and played like it.

‌Jude Bellingham - 8

Scored England’s first goal of the Euros and then their best goal (an overhead kick to keep them in). Did he set it alight? No. But still did very well.

‌Jarrod Bowen - 6

His cameo role as a substitute against Serbia showed his pace and crossing accuracy. Still ahead of Anthony Gordon in the pecking order.

‌Eberechi Eze - 6

It is hard to imagine him being a starter any time soon, but his substitute appearances showed he is ready for this level. Solid first tournament.

‌Phil Foden - 7

Had his best game for England against Holland. We did see glimpses of his best in this tournament even if not enough overall.

‌Anthony Gordon - 4

Made his biggest splash by falling off his bike. Anyone still banging on about Gordon misses the point: you have to earn the right in training.

‌Harry Kane - 6

Scored three goals (as many as anyone in the tournament) and led England to a final. But this was a big disappointment. Clearly not fit.

‌Cole Palmer - 8

Showed what a big star he is for the future. A real game-changer and winner for England. Hugely talented. Must start games from now on.

‌Bukayo Saka - 7

Put in strong performances throughout - both as a wing-back and as a winger. Such a key player for England. The face of England’s future.

‌Ivan Toney - 6

The no-look penalty in the shootout and his assist for Harry Kane ’s winner against Slovakia fully justified his selection. A real handful.

Ollie Watkins - 7

His brilliant winner against Holland underlined his quality and also made him a national hero! Lovely story. Showed he’s England class.
